Why do certain characters disappear when I try to search?
memFrag does not currently support searching of most special characters, such as quotes, dollar signs, etc.
How do privacy levels work?
There are three privacy levels available:
1. Public. Public items are publicly identified as belonging to you.
2. Anonymous. Anonymous items are available for public view, but their ownership is anonymous. This means nobody,
except for their owner, can tell who owns them.
3. Private. Private items are accessible only by their owner and do not show up in public search results. Note
that only frags can be made private.
The default privacy setting for new links and frags is "anonymous". This can be changed in your user preferences.
In most cases, privacy will be set for you automatically. See:
How does privacy inheritance ("auto" privacy) work?.
What do the icon colors mean?
memFrag uses three primary icons to designate personal objects:
Colored icons are used to represent privacy settings. The images above are "plain" icons and represent the default privacy setting
of "anonymous". Green icons are public, and red icons are private:
This link is public
This link is anonymous
This frag is public
This frag is anonymous
This frag is private
Directories are colored to represent the privacy settings of new items created within them. The front of the directory represents
frags, while the back represents links:
Links: Public - Frags: Public
Links: Public - Frags: Anonymous
Links: Public - Frags: Private
Links: Anonymous - Frags: Anonymous
Links: Anonymous - Frags: Public
Links: Anonymous - Frags: Private
How does privacy inheritance ("auto" privacy) work?
Privacy inheritance works much like standard filesystem permissions inheritance:
- When adding an item, "auto" privacy will:
- If adding to a directory, set privacy to match the directory;
- Otherwise, set privacy to match your defaults (in "preferences").
- When editing an item, "auto" privacy leaves the item's current privacy settings intact.
- If you manually set the privacy of an item, either during creation or editing, it's privacy will be
set to your selectoin.
Note: Privacy inheritance works across all objects - links, frags and directories.
An example of privacy inheritance: Let's say you create a directory called "Restaurants" in your root directory.
During creation, you leave links privacy set to "auto", and you set frags privacy to "private". The results of this
action will set the directory's links privacy to the default settings in your user preferences, and the directory's
frags privacy to "private". If your user preference default for links was "Anonymous", the directory would therefore
have privacy settings of "links: anonymous" and "frags: private".
Now, if you create a new frag within the "Restaurants" directory and leave the privacy set to "auto", that frag will
be set to private - it's maching the directory's privacy setting, instead of the setting in your user preferences.
The same thing holds true for creating a new link or even a new directory within "Restaurants." If you create "Restaurants/Chinese",
the "Chinese" directory will, assuming you leave privacy set to "auto", take on the privacy settings of "Restaurants".
Let's say you fill "Restaurants" with links, frags, and other directories, then change the privacy setting of "Restaurants".
What happens to the objects within "Restaurants"? Nothing. They inherited their privacy upon creation, and that privacy now
belongs to them. The new privacy settings of "Restaurants" will apply only to new objects.
My toolbar disappeared!
Your toolbar may have been disabled by mistake. To re-enable it, simply click "View, Toolbars, memFrag."
If it doesn't exist in your "View, Toolbars" menu, reinstall it by logging into your memFrag account and clicking "Integrate".
Some of my links are missing from the toolbar.
Click "Tools, Refresh Cache" to update your toolbar with the latest account changes.
The toolbar maintains a copy of your links in what is called a "local cache" file. This allows you to access them
in the event of a problem with our web site. If you make any changes from our web interface, or from a different
computer, the toolbar's cache needs to be updated.
I don't see "Import", "Refresh Cache", etc, under "Tools".
Make sure you're clicking the "Tools" button on the toolbar, not the "Tools" menu on your web browser.
